The History of St. Paul Evangelical Church
On May 5, 1956, the former All Souls Universalist Church at 45 College Ave. in Somerville, MA became the Somerville Assembly of God. Dr. Samuel S. Bombara was its founding pastor. In 1970, the church changed its name to St. Paul Evangelical Church, while still remaining affiliated with the Assemblies of God. Some of the programs which made the church so popular in Somerville included:
- The Community Nursery School, directed by Genevieve Bombara, serving the community for over 25 years.
- Outdoor evangelistic concerts on the corner of College & Morrison Aves.
- The annual 3 Mile Road Race.
- Vacation Bible School, an exciting one-week program for children in August.
- Bible studies led by clergy and laity at the church and in people's homes.
In 1998, Construction of a new church facility in Lexington began. The facility was completed in one year, through miraculous financial provisions. The new St. Paul's building includes a sanctuary seating 400, a prayer chapel, administrative offices, educational complex, kitchen and fellowship hall.
The new facility in Lexington has enabled us to accommodate our congregation more adequately. The church building is conveniently located less than 2 miles from Route 128 and the Burlington Mall. Our congregation includes people from Lexington, other cities in the Boston area and New Hampshire.
Throughout the years, St.Paul's has been committed to missions, supporting over 20 missionaries around the world. Pastor Bombara has been directly involved in ministry through Overseas Ministries, Inc. in Eastern Europe. Pastor Bombara travels annually to Eastern Europe, preaching in churches and teaching at the Evangelical Theological Seminary in Osijek, Croatia.
